Tactics — Chess Terms

Tactics are short-range sequences of moves that win material or deliver checkmate. Forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, and combinations live here — the vocabulary of the board's decisive moments.

An attack is a move or coordinated plan that threatens an opponent’s piece, pawn, key square, or king, forcing them to respond.

A back-rank mate is a checkmate in which a king trapped on its back rank by its own unmoved pawns or pieces is attacked along that rank by an enemy rook or queen.
Bonehead Move Beginner

Check Beginner
Check occurs when a player's king is under direct attack by an opponent's piece and must be resolved on the next move.
Checkmate Beginner
Checkmate ends the game when a king is in check and has no legal way to escape by moving, capturing the attacker, or blocking the attack.
Corridor Mate Beginner
A corridor mate is a checkmate in which a rook or queen attacks the king along an open file or rank while the king’s own pieces or the board edge block escape on the adjacent lines, forming a narrow corridor.
Discovered Attack Beginner

Fork Beginner

Pin Beginner
A pin occurs when a long-range piece attacks an enemy unit that shields a more valuable piece or the king on the same line, leaving the attacked unit immobilised.
