- Epaulet mate, Shoulder mate
Epaulette mate occurs when two rooks or queens stand on the same rank as the enemy king, immediately adjacent to it on either side. The pieces act like shoulder ornaments, cutting off the king’s lateral escapes while delivering check along the rank.
The pattern usually appears on the back rank. The king cannot step forward because its own pawns or pieces block the way, and it cannot capture the checking pieces because they are protected or because the second attacker covers the capture square. The result is mate with very little material.
Typical setup
Place the enemy king on e8. Put rooks on d8 and f8. If the king’s own pawns sit on the seventh rank and the rooks are defended, the king is mated. The same geometry works with queens instead of rooks, or with the king on the edge files (a-file or h-file).

How to reach the pattern
The mate often arises after a series of exchanges on the back rank that leave the defender’s king trapped between two heavy pieces. It can also appear in the endgame when one side forces the enemy king to the edge and then swings both rooks to the same rank.
Because the two attacking pieces must stand next to the king, the pattern is relatively rare in open positions but becomes a useful tactical resource once the board simplifies and rooks or queens gain access to the back rank.
