Dovetail mate is a queen mate in which the enemy king is trapped on the edge of the board by its own pieces. Those pieces block the king’s flight squares in a compact, dovetail-like formation, leaving the queen to deliver mate from a short distance away.
The pattern usually occurs on the a- or h-file or on the back rank. The queen attacks the king along a diagonal or file while also controlling the remaining escape squares. Because the king’s own units occupy the natural flight squares, the mate cannot be escaped by moving the king; it can only be prevented by capturing the queen or interpose.
Typical shape
The blocked squares form a V or wedge shape immediately in front of the king. Two friendly pieces or pawns sit on adjacent squares (often diagonally forward), cutting off lateral and forward movement. The queen then stands one or two squares away, protected or simply out of reach, and attacks the king directly.
Example
{"v":1,"type":"board","orientation":"white","fen":"8/8/8/8/8/1Q6/p2K4/k7 w - - 0 1","arrows":[{"from":"b3","to":"a2","color":"good"}],"highlights":[{"square":"a1","color":"bad"},{"square":"a2","color":"bad"}],"alt":"White queen on b3 mates black king on a1. Black’s own pawn on a2 blocks the only flight square, creating the dovetail shape."}
In this position the black king on a1 is mated by the queen on b3. The pawn on a2 prevents the king from stepping to a2, and the edge of the board removes the other escapes. The queen is safe because it attacks a1 while also eyeing the pawn.
The same geometry can appear with the queen on the c-file or with different supporting pieces. The essential feature remains the tight cluster of the king’s own units that seals its own fate.
