Babson Task is a highly specialized chess problem in which White must answer each of Black’s four possible pawn promotions with a matching promotion of White’s own pawn. If Black promotes to a queen, White must also promote to a queen and deliver mate; the same rule applies for rook, bishop, and knight.
The task is named after the American composer Henry Babson, who challenged problemists to realize this idea in the early twentieth century. Because the four black promotions create four very different defensive resources, the white mating lines must be constructed so that each promotion type is met by a corresponding white promotion that both neutralizes the new black piece and produces mate.
In practice this demands extreme economy and precise geometry. The same white pawn often has to promote on four different squares or at four different moments, each time interacting with the newly created black piece in a unique way. Most known Babson Tasks are direct-mate problems in two or three moves, though longer versions and helpmate forms also exist.
The difficulty is legendary. Only a handful of sound Babson Tasks have ever been published, and each required years of work by master composers. The first complete four-promotion version was achieved by Leonid Yarosh in 1983; subsequent examples remain rare and are regarded as the summit of orthodox problem composition.
