About Chesswick

An AI chess coach built around the games you’ve actually played: openings, tactics, strategy, and endgames in plain English.

Chesswick is built to feel like talking to a knowledgeable club player: practical advice, occasional wit, and genuine respect for how real humans learn and play chess.

How it works

Enter your Chess.com username and Chesswick pulls your recent public games for context. From there you can ask about specific positions, request a move-by-move review, or ask any chess question that’s on your mind.

No sign-in required and no password asked. Your Chess.com account is never touched. You can also skip the username entirely and go straight to chat with a question or position.

What it covers

  • Game review. Move-by-move thoughts on the games you actually played, not the ones in a textbook.
  • Openings. Why your moves work (or don’t), and how to handle the middlegame positions they lead to.
  • Tactics. Patterns you may be missing, and how to start spotting them faster over the board.
  • Strategy & endgames. Piece activity, pawn structure, and the technique that separates improving players from plateaued ones.

The team

Chesswick is built and maintained by chess players and engineers who believe good coaching should be practical, accessible, and grounded in the games you actually play. The team combines chess expertise (tournament experience, coaching backgrounds, and a respect for how adults learn) with software engineering discipline.

Content in the Chess Dictionary is researched and reviewed following documented editorial standards that prioritize accuracy and clarity.

Methodology

The coach uses large language models (LLMs) trained on chess instruction, annotated games, and strategic principles. When you provide your Chess.com username, Chesswick fetches your recent public games via their Published-Data API and incorporates them as context. Nothing you do here affects your Chess.com account.

Guardrails filter out inappropriate queries and coaching requests unrelated to chess. Prompts are refined over time based on real usage patterns and feedback.

A note on accuracy

Responses are AI-generated. The coach is good at explaining ideas, patterns, and plans, but less reliable for deep tactical calculation or precise engine lines. Verify critical lines against your engine or a database when it matters. Dictionary entries are fact-checked and reviewed; chat responses are generated on the fly.

Not affiliated with Chess.com

Chesswick is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Chess.com, Lichess, or any other chess service. References to those sites (and the optional ability to look up your public Chess.com username for context) are provided only so the coach can talk about your games. Trademarks and brand names belong to their respective owners.
