Decoy sacrifice offers material to lure an enemy piece onto a chosen square where it loses its defensive role or becomes vulnerable to further attack.

The idea is simple yet powerful: you give up a piece or pawn so the opponent is forced to capture. That capture drags their piece away from an important duty or lands it on a square where your forces can immediately exploit it.

The square you offer is selected with precision. It is rarely random; it usually removes a defender from a critical line, blocks an escape route, or places the piece directly in the path of your own attackers.

Consider a position where an enemy queen defends both a loose piece and a key square near its king. Sacrificing a rook on that key square forces the queen to capture. Once the queen moves, the previously defended piece falls, and the material balance often swings back in your favour or better.

The success of the decoy depends on the opponent having no better reply than to accept the sacrifice. If the piece can safely ignore the offer, the tactic fails. Therefore the decoy square must create an immediate and unavoidable threat.

A decoy sacrifice differs from deflection in that the lured piece is drawn to a specific square rather than simply moved off its post. It also differs from clearance because the goal is to occupy the square with the enemy piece, not to vacate it for your own use.

The tactic works best when the offered capture is the only reasonable reply and the resulting position exposes a new weakness such as an undefended piece or an exposed king.

Frequently asked questions

What is a decoy sacrifice in chess?
A decoy sacrifice offers material to lure an enemy piece onto a chosen square where it loses its defensive role or becomes vulnerable to further attack.
How does a decoy sacrifice work?
The sacrifice forces the opponent to capture on the offered square, dragging their piece away from a key duty or into the line of fire of your own forces.
When is a decoy sacrifice most effective?
It works best when the opponent has no safe way to ignore the offer and the lured piece leaves behind a critical weakness such as an undefended piece or exposed king.
How does a decoy sacrifice differ from deflection?
A decoy sacrifice draws a piece onto a specific harmful square, whereas deflection pushes a piece off its defensive duty without dictating its new location.
Can a decoy sacrifice be ignored by the opponent?
The tactic fails if the opponent has a stronger reply, because the decoy square must create an immediate and unavoidable threat that compels capture.
