Pawn Chain

A pawn chain is a diagonal line of same-color pawns on adjacent files. Each pawn protects the one ahead of it while being protected by the one behind.

The pawn at the base of the chain is the most secure because it receives support from every pawn behind it. The pawn at the head is the most exposed because nothing stands in front to shield it.

How chains arise

Pawn chains form when opposing pawns advance or capture along diagonals and lock against each other. A classic example occurs in the French Defense after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5. White’s pawns on d4 and e5 support each other, while Black’s pawns on d5 and e6 do the same.

Strategic ideas

Players normally attack a pawn chain at its base. Removing the base pawn leaves every pawn ahead of it without support, causing the whole structure to collapse.

The head of the chain can sometimes be challenged directly with a pawn break, but this is usually harder because the head is well defended by its own pieces. The base is the natural target because it has the least natural protection from its own side.

Chains also influence piece play. A chain on light squares often leaves its owner with a bad bishop that is blocked by its own pawns, while the opponent’s bishop may become powerful on the opposite color. Breaking or blockading the chain is therefore a common plan in closed positions.
