Nimzowitsch was a Latvian-Danish grandmaster and one of the most influential chess theorists of the early twentieth century. His book My System introduced ideas that remain central to positional play today.

He emphasised preventing the opponent’s plans rather than simply advancing your own. This approach, called prophylaxis, asks you to identify the opponent’s most dangerous idea and stop it before it happens. In practice this often means placing pieces on squares that control key lines or squares the opponent wants to use.

Another core concept is overprotection. Instead of defending a strong point with the minimum force required, Nimzowitsch recommended guarding it with more pieces than necessary. The extra defenders then become free to support other operations while the strong point remains secure.

He also championed the blockade. When an enemy pawn is fixed on a square where it cannot advance, it loses its dynamic value and can become a target. Placing a piece, especially a knight, directly in front of that pawn turns the pawn into a shield for your own pieces and restricts the opponent’s mobility.

These ideas shifted attention from purely tactical calculation toward long-term strategic planning. Nimzowitsch showed that controlling key squares and restricting the opponent’s options often matters more than immediate threats.

Frequently asked questions

Who was Aron Nimzowitsch?
He was a Latvian-Danish grandmaster and leading chess theorist of the early twentieth century whose book My System shaped modern positional play.
What is prophylaxis according to Nimzowitsch?
Prophylaxis means identifying the opponent’s most dangerous plan and stopping it in advance by controlling key squares or lines.
What is overprotection in Nimzowitsch’s teachings?
Overprotection places more defenders on a strong point than strictly needed so the extra pieces remain free for other tasks while the point stays secure.
What is the blockade concept?
The blockade fixes an enemy pawn so it cannot advance, turning it into a target and using the square in front of it, ideally occupied by a knight, to restrict the opponent’s mobility.
